Air Austral, the French Indian Ocean island-based airline, has announced plans to replace its Airbus A220 fleet with Airbus A320neo aircraft. This decision follows extensive internal assessments and recent discussions about operational challenges associated with the current fleet. The airline has signed a letter of intent with Macquarie AirFinance to lease the new aircraft, which are scheduled for delivery in March and May 2027. The move aims to replace the existing A220-300s, which have experienced ongoing technical issues primarily related to Pratt & Whitney GTF engines.
The airline's current fleet includes three A220-300 jets delivered in July 2021. However, frustrations over engine reliability have prompted a strategic shift toward more reliable and fuel-efficient aircraft. The Airbus A320neo, which the airline considers the "perfect replacement," is expected to enhance operational efficiency and reduce technical disruptions, aligning with Air Austral’s broader fleet modernization goals.
This transition marks a significant milestone in the airline’s plans to optimize its medium-haul operations and improve service reliability. By adopting the A320neo, Air Austral seeks to ensure greater availability and performance, supporting its continued growth and regional connectivity.
