Air China is set to resume services to India in April, marking a key development in the restoration of aviation links between the two countries. The airline will operate thrice weekly flights between Beijing Capital International Airport and Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, utilizing Airbus A330-300 aircraft. This new route will be the only nonstop connection between the two capitals, offering approximately 1,800 seats in each direction weekly.

The restart of flights follows an agreement reached in August 2025 between Chinese and Indian officials to allow direct air travel. This move signals efforts to rebuild strained air connectivity that was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions, notably the border clash in the Galwan Valley in 2020. Several carriers, including IndiGo, China Eastern, and Air India, have already re-established routes linking major Chinese and Indian cities.

Capacity and Demand Outlook

Current capacity levels are still below pre-pandemic figures, with about 11,654 two-way weekly seats, compared to 22,934 in 2019. However, more routes are expected to commence soon, such as China Eastern's upcoming Kunming-Kolkata link. Market data indicates a 16% year-over-year increase in two-way passenger traffic in 2025, supported by relaxed visa policies and a general revival of travel between the nations.

The gradual pick-up in capacity and passenger numbers illustrates a broader recovery in China-India air travel, with the potential for further growth as political and health restrictions continue to ease. This development is seen as a positive signal for bilateral economic and tourism exchanges, with aviation showing resilience and adaptability amid ongoing global challenges.
