Air India Express has announced the initiation of weekly non-stop flights connecting Varanasi, India, with Bangkok, Thailand, starting February 1, 2026. This new service aims to provide travelers with direct connectivity to Bangkok, a popular leisure destination in Asia, and facilitate tourism between the two cities. The flight schedule indicates departure from Varanasi at 12:35 pm on Sundays and return from Bangkok at 7:05 pm on the same day.
Aloke Singh, Managing Director of Air India Express, highlighted the strategic significance of this route in enhancing international connectivity and supporting the Buddhist circuit tourism, which is prominent in Varanasi. The airline currently operates numerous flights from Varanasi to domestic and international destinations, including a notable presence in the United Arab Emirates, and was the first to introduce international flights from the city in 2015.
Expansion in Thailand and Munich
The announcement also coincides with Etihad Airways' plans to increase service from Munich, launching a third daily flight to Abu Dhabi from September 2026 to meet rising demand. The additional flight will operate with an Airbus A321LR, supplementing existing Boeing 787 services, further expanding Etihad's capacity at Munich Airport. Both airlines aim to strengthen their global networks and provide more options to passengers traveling in and through these key hubs.
Overall, these developments reflect broader efforts by Indian and Middle Eastern carriers to expand international routes, improve connectivity, and support tourism growth in regions like Southeast Asia and Europe. The emerging route between Varanasi and Bangkok signifies a step forward in India’s increasing engagement with Southeast Asian markets, promoting cultural and commercial exchanges.
