Air India, India's flagship airline, is implementing extensive cost-cutting measures in response to significant financial losses and ongoing regional tensions. The airline's board is considering reducing its flight schedule by over 20 percent between May and July 2026, while also contemplating unpaid leave for technical staff, in an effort to mitigate a loss of approximately US$2.3 billion last year.
The geopolitical challenges in the Middle East, including restrictions over Iran and Pakistan, have forced Indian aircraft on international routes to take longer detours, increasing fuel consumption and reducing demand. These factors are leading industry observers to predict potential capacity cuts of up to 30 percent during the upcoming summer season if the situation does not stabilize.
Operational and Ethical Reforms
Alongside operational adjustments, the airline is pursuing internal reforms, including salary reductions for executives and the abolition of bonuses. Since 2023, the company has dismissed over 1,000 employees for ethical violations, such as misuse of travel benefits and smuggling activities, as part of efforts to restore integrity after its acquisition by the Tata Group.
Under the leadership of CEO Campbell Wilson, Air India remains committed to expanding its fleet with orders from Airbus and Boeing, aiming to improve long-term competitiveness. However, securing immediate liquidity remains a priority, with a decision on flight reductions expected by late May, influenced by fuel costs and regional security concerns.
