Air India is actively advancing its global expansion and fleet modernization efforts, deploying new aircraft with renovated interiors to key markets. The airline is not only improving its product offering across major international destinations but also increasing capacity on specific long-haul routes in response to rising demand and seat requirements.
In the short term, Air India has scheduled several operational changes for February and March 2026. Notably, they are deploying the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in a three-class configuration on the Delhi-Tokyo Haneda route, which began on 14 February 2026, adding approximately 2,408 seats monthly on this route. Furthermore, service frequency on the Delhi-Toronto route will increase from 7 to 10 weekly flights starting 1 March 2026, while flights to Seoul Incheon and Shanghai are also scheduled to increase in frequency in March.
Upcoming Route Enhancements
Looking ahead, the airline plans to upgrade its Summer 2026 routes, including launching Mumbai-London Heathrow flights operated by the new Boeing 787-9, which will feature all-new cabin interiors replacing older aircraft like the Boeing 777-300ER. Additionally, Airbus A321neo flights will be boosted globally, with new premium offerings such as first class between Delhi and Melbourne, and new services from Bengaluru to London Heathrow set to commence in August 2026.
"A significant component of Air India's modernization is a $400 million retrofit program targeting 26 legacy Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which will include interior upgrades and new liveries, aligning older fleets with the airline’s rebranded image. This initiative addresses lagging premium product offerings and supports the goal of fleet harmonization as multiple new aircraft join the fleet over the next decade," said an industry source.
This fleet upgrade initiative aims to modernize and harmonize Air India's fleet, ensuring competitive offerings on premium routes and maintaining steady growth as new aircraft are introduced over the next ten years.
