Air India has introduced its first retrofitted Boeing 787-8, registered VT-ANT, marking a significant step in its fleet modernization. The aircraft underwent comprehensive interior upgrades at Boeing’s Modification Centre in Victorville, California, and received a new livery at AeroPro in San Bernardino before operational deployment to Delhi. This initiative aims to elevate the airline’s global presence with a refreshed branding and improved passenger comforts.
The new livery features darker colors and a prominent "Taj Mahal" motif, aligning with the airline’s modern branding strategy under Tata Group ownership. Inside, the cabin has been reimagined to provide a more contemporary and comfortable experience. Business class seats now offer full lie-flat beds in a 1-2-1 layout, enhancing privacy and aisle access. Premium Economy also benefits from increased legroom and in-seat charging, while Economy features updated seating, lighting, and inflight entertainment hardware.
This retrofit signifies an effort to align Air India’s product offerings with international standards and improve its competitive edge on long-haul routes to destinations such as the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, and Asia. Industry analysts view this move as positive, though broader operational reforms remain crucial for the airline’s future success. The upgraded aircraft and revamped branding reflect a renewed focus on passenger experience and market positioning, contributing to Air India’s broader restructuring and recovery plan.
