Air India has confirmed that its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner will begin service on the Mumbai-Frankfurt route starting 1 February 2026. The aircraft, registered VT-AWA, is a line-fit 787-9 model unique to Air India, marking a significant step in the airline's fleet modernization and service improvement efforts under the Tata Group ownership.
The new route will operate as AI2027, departing Mumbai at 12:35 and arriving in Frankfurt at 17:30, with the return flight AI2028 leaving Frankfurt at 20:20 and returning to Mumbai the following morning. This flight operates five times weekly and enhances connectivity to Europe and beyond, leveraging a codeshare partnership with Lufthansa that provides seamless onward connections to multiple global destinations.
Strategic Fleet and Service Improvements
The airline’s integration of these new 787s aims to enhance passenger experience by offering more consistent product standards across its fleet. The aircraft are part of ongoing efforts by Tata Group to invest in premium onboard amenities and higher service quality, especially in economy and business classes. This initiative follows Air India’s acquisition of aircraft previously operated by other airlines, aiming to rebuild its brand and operational consistency.
Air India’s investment aligns with its broader strategy to increase capacity and improve international connectivity, especially to key markets such as Asia, Australia, and popular leisure destinations. The airline continues to focus on strengthening its position as a vital player connecting India with global markets.
"This Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a significant milestone for Air India as we modernize our fleet to meet international standards," said Air India spokesperson. "It exemplifies our commitment to improving passenger experience and expanding our global reach."
As the airline continues to rebuild and expand its network, these fleet updates are a step toward restoring Air India’s reputation as a competitive international carrier on the world stage.
