Air New Zealand is implementing a series of flight reductions and fare increases amid a surge in jet fuel prices caused by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Over the next two months, the airline will cut approximately 1,100 flights, affecting around 44,000 passengers. This strategic move aims to manage operational costs while maintaining service levels where possible.

The airline's CEO, Nikhil Ravishankar, explained that the changes primarily target off-peak and domestic routes, such as flights from Marlborough to Wellington, as well as those involving Auckland and Christchurch. His statement highlighted efforts to re-accommodate travelers on alternative flights and prioritize routes vital for international connections, notably to Europe via US airspace.

Meanwhile, fuel prices have escalated from about $90 per barrel before the conflict to as much as $200, leading to fare hikes—domestic flights up by $10, short-haul by $20, and long-haul by $90. Airlines globally are adjusting prices accordingly; Qantas and Scandinavian carrier SAS have followed similar trends, while low-cost carriers like Ryanair and easyJet have been less affected due to fixed-fuel arrangements. Ryanair’s chief, Michael O’Leary, confirmed that fuel cost increases are not impacting their fares, unlike full-service carriers that are absorbing higher expenses.

Travel industry experts warn that increased fuel costs will likely lead to some route cancellations and fare adjustments. Gary Leff of View from the Wing noted that longer routes, such as those in New Zealand, could see reductions in service, especially when profitability is strained by higher operating costs. As the geopolitical situation unfolds, airlines are balancing operational adjustments with passenger demand in a challenging economic environment.
