Air New Zealand has announced a significant update to its scheduling procedures aimed at improving flight punctuality. The airline's recent enhancements were driven by a desire to better reflect ground realities and gate logistics at major airports, especially at Auckland. This approach has resulted in notable increases in on-time arrivals, with rates reaching over 80% in recent months.
Kate Boyer, the airline's general manager for airports, explained that previously, turn times were standardized across all locations, which often did not accommodate specific airport needs. By customizing turn times based on individual airport and gate requirements, the airline has bolstered its reliability and customer satisfaction.
Operational Improvements and Performance Gains
To sustain these improvements, Air New Zealand has implemented comprehensive training programs, invested in ground support equipment, and enhanced communication among ground teams. These efforts are part of a broader business-wide initiative that emphasizes operational excellence on a daily basis.
"At Auckland Airport, some gates require additional time for aircraft tugs to meet arriving aircraft, which we now incorporate into our planning," said Kate Boyer.
Despite facing challenges such as engine issues affecting their Airbus and Boeing fleets, the airline proactively managed schedule adjustments and capacity balancing, including wet-leasing aircraft when necessary. This strategic flexibility contributed to their improved performance, placing second in the Asia-Pacific region behind Philippine Airlines in 2025, according to Cirium data.
Overall, Air New Zealand’s focus on tailored scheduling and operational efficiency underscores its commitment to delivering reliable service and maintaining competitive advantages in a challenging environment.
