AirAsia has once again been honored as the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline at the Skytrax 2026 awards, marking its 17th consecutive victory in this category. This achievement underscores the airline’s ongoing commitment to providing affordable and dependable travel options to passengers worldwide, as reflected by the results of the annual passenger survey conducted by Skytrax.
According to airline co-founder Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, the recognition is a testament to the trust passengers place in the airline. Over the past few years, AirAsia has expanded its reach beyond traditional low-cost flying, creating a connected travel ecosystem spanning over 130 destinations across 26 countries. The airline’s signature flatlay seat, which offers full lie-flat comfort at affordable prices, has garnered social media attention and contributed to its popularity, especially on longer routes such as Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur.
Despite facing industry challenges such as rising costs and softer demand, AirAsia continues to optimize its network, including the suspension of less profitable routes like Sydney–Kuala Lumpur. Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted called attention to the airline’s consistent excellence and its significance within the competitive low-cost segment.
In addition to the top low-cost airline accolade, AirAsia was also named ‘Best International Airline of the Year’ at the Australian Aviation Awards 2026. Regional competitors such as Virgin Australia and Qantas also received recognition, with the former ranking third among regional airlines and the latter securing 12th place in the overall airline rankings.
