AirAsia Aviation Group is preparing for a strategic expansion that includes the launch of a Middle East hub in the second half of 2026. According to Group CEO Bo Lingam, initial flights will connect Kuala Lumpur International (KUL) to Bahrain International (BAH), with potential connections to Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK). Bahrain is chosen as a cost-effective and less congested alternative to Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and the group is also considering establishing a Bahrain-based Air Operator's Certificate (AOC).

To support this growth, AirAsia plans to induct 11 new aircraft in 2026, comprising four Airbus A321-200NX(LR) and seven A321-200NX aircraft, along with 15 to 30 leased A320-200s. These fleet additions will bolster the airline’s capacity to serve new routes and expand existing ones across Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Middle East.

The company’s broader fleet strategy involves acquiring aircraft such as the Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 models, which will help meet rising passenger demand and enhance its global network connectivity. The expansion reflects AirAsia’s commitment to strengthening its position as a leading low-cost carrier with extensive regional and international routes.

The plans are part of a wider vision to connect Kuala Lumpur to key markets in Europe and the Middle East through Bahrain, leveraging its strategic location and infrastructure advantages. The airline aims to establish Bahrain as a key hub in its international network, facilitated by its fleet renewal and route network expansion.
