AirAsia is undertaking a major restructuring plan aimed at consolidating its operations around a predominantly narrowbody fleet. The company announced the cancellation of its A330-900N aircraft order and plans to retire its A330-300 fleet within the next six years. This shift aligns with its strategic goal to become a "narrowbody low-cost network carrier," leveraging the increased range of the A321XLR to expand into new markets such as Europe and the United States via virtual hubs in the Middle East, Europe, and Japan.

Following recent approvals, the group intends to relist AirAsia X shares on Bursa Malaysia and merge its various carriers under a single AirAsia Group umbrella while maintaining separate legal entities. The company plans to operate a fleet of approximately 600 aircraft by 2035, with passenger numbers projected to reach 155 million and network destinations expanding from 143 to 175 in the coming decade. The company also aims to grow its fleet of narrowbody aircraft, including orders for up to fifty A321XLRs, with additional aircraft models under discussion.

Financial and Market Strategies

In addition to fleet restructuring, AirAsia is exploring various financing options, including a bond issuance of up to USD600 million to refinance existing debt. The group's CEO, Tony Fernandes, highlighted strong market interest and emphasized the company's focus on fleet modernization and expansion. The disposal of older widebody aircraft and a strategic focus on narrowbodies underpin this operational transformation, with plans for future international expansion supported by an expanded and modernized fleet.

Overall, AirAsia's restructuring reflects a strategic pivot toward efficiency and growth amid industry shifts, positioning the airline for a more agile and expansive future in the competitive low-cost carrier market.
