AirAsia Group Bhd experienced a significant decline in its stock price on Thursday, reaching its lowest point in nearly four years amid mounting concerns over its financial stability. The airline's shares fell by as much as 14 sen, approximately 22%, closing at 50.5 sen, with over 155 million shares traded, making it the second most active stock on Bursa Malaysia.

The downward movement follows a Reuters report indicating that the Malaysian government has approached Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air to potentially absorb AirAsia's domestic market share, reflecting fears of increased competition and financial strain.

Financial Challenges and Market Response

Since the start of the year, AirAsia's stock has lost more than 70% of its value due to soaring jet fuel prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions, notably the Iran War. The airline's current market capitalization is under RM1.7 billion. In response to its financial woes, AirAsia is seeking up to US$1 billion in international debt and additional local credit facilities primarily aimed at debt restructuring and balance sheet strengthening, rather than operational funding.

The airline reported a widening net loss of RM527.16 million for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, leading to capacity cuts of 20% to 25% year-on-year and the suspension of underperforming long-haul routes. Additionally, plans to establish a hub in Bahrain have been delayed, reflecting ongoing strategic adjustments.

AirAsia also faced foreign exchange losses from the depreciation of local currencies, including the ringgit, Thai baht, Indonesian rupiah, and Philippine peso, against the US dollar during the quarter.

These developments highlight the airline's aggressive efforts to manage its financial challenges amid volatile economic conditions. The Malaysian government’s approach to the airline industry indicates a cautious outlook as AirAsia navigates these turbulent waters.
