AirAsia is moving forward with plans to launch a new airline despite the current industry challenges fueled by geopolitical tensions and market uncertainties. Co-founder Tony Fernandes disclosed that the airline is preparing to introduce the carrier within the next one or two months, while simultaneously progressing with a US$19 billion order for 150 Airbus A220 aircraft. Fernandes regards this expansion as an opportunity arising from crisis, aiming to deploy smaller jets across Asia to capitalize on market dynamics.

To finance its growth, AirAsia is considering raising up to US$600 million through bonds, refinancing loans, and attracting investments from Canadian pension funds. The airline's fleet, currently comprising approximately 250 Airbus aircraft operating mainly in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, will expand its backlog to around 550 jets, facilitating further route and market growth. Additionally, plans are underway to extend services to Bahrain and establish a local presence there, reflecting the airline's strategic route expansion amid geopolitical uncertainties.

Despite experiencing a roughly 35% decline in share value since the outbreak of the Iran conflict, Fernandes remains assertive that oil prices will stabilize and eventually fall. His decision to avoid fuel hedging, often used by other airlines to manage costs, is based on his belief that such measures do not yield long-term benefits. The airline's bold outlook and investment in new aircraft underscore Fernandes's strategy to leverage market opportunities during turbulence and to emerge stronger from the current downturn.

Overall, this move highlights AirAsia’s commitment to growth and resilience, utilizing large aircraft orders and planned route expansions to strengthen its position in the Asian aviation market as conditions stabilize.
