AirAsia co-founder Tony Fernandes has assured that the airline possesses strong liquidity to endure the recent spike in jet fuel prices, which have been driven by geopolitical tensions. Speaking publicly, Fernandes shared that the airline intends to raise over US$1 billion by early 2027 primarily to refinance existing debt, demonstrating a proactive approach to financial management amid ongoing market volatility.

Fernandes emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic was far more disruptive for the airline industry and expressed confidence in AirAsia's ability to manage demand and cash flow. He further clarified that the Malaysian government has never provided financial support to the airline in its 25-year history and stated that there are no ongoing discussions about a rescue or bailout.

Strategic Restructuring and Fleet Modernization

The airline is executing an aggressive restructuring plan that includes canceling underperforming routes, returning older aircraft, and renegotiating vendor contracts to reduce costs. Despite the recent surge in fuel prices—up 66% in the second quarter—Fernandes remains optimistic, citing high load factors and strong bookings for upcoming quarters. Plans are underway to accelerate the transition to fuel-efficient Airbus A321LR and XLR aircraft, with significant announcements expected soon.

"The refinancing is about bringing down costs, not raising new capital," Fernandes explained, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve financial stability through debt restructuring and potential bond issuance. He also mentioned active discussions with international banks and investments from Middle Eastern investors, seeking favorable terms to reinforce the airline’s capital position.

Amid these developments, AirAsia continues to focus on operational efficiency and fleet renewal, viewing fleet modernization as vital to maintaining its competitive edge in the region. Fernandes remains cautiously optimistic that the airline will navigate through current challenges and emerge stronger in the near future.
