AirAsia's co-founder Tony Fernandes announced plans to unveil a new airline within the next two months. This initiative is part of the airline’s strategic expansion, accompanied by a record order for 150 Airbus A220 aircraft, with an option for a further 150 jets, valued at approximately US$19 billion. The move aims to reposition AirAsia as the world's first 'narrowbody global low-cost carrier,' transitioning from its existing fleet to a high-utilization, fuel-efficient model.
The ordered Airbus A220 aircraft, known for their range and efficiency, will primarily serve intra-Asian routes but may also extend to destinations within Australia, such as Darwin and Cairns. Fernandes emphasized that the new jets are around 20 percent more fuel-efficient and produce about 20 percent fewer emissions than the A320ceo, which supports AirAsia’s long-term sustainability and operational goals.
This fleet expansion aligns with the company's vision to build a comprehensive, low-cost network across Asia and beyond. Fernandes noted that the aircraft will help optimise capacity and improve profitability while allowing the airline to explore new markets. The announcement reflects AirAsia’s resilience amid volatile fuel prices, leveraging strategic investments to support future growth and extensive route connectivity.
