The aerospace company Airbus has announced the successful maiden flight of its latest aircraft model, the A350F, on 29 September 2026 from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport in France. The prototype, MSN700, was airborne for just over four hours, during which it tested crucial systems such as airworthiness and flight handling. Derived from the popular A350-1000 passenger aircraft, the A350F features a wider fuselage for cargo and a large main-deck cargo door, designed to accommodate oversized freight.
This milestone is part of Airbus's plan to certify the aircraft within nine months, preparing for commercial deliveries expected in the second half of 2027. The aircraft's specifications include a payload capacity of up to 111 tonnes and a range of about 8,700 kilometers, offering a competitive option for the air freight industry currently dominated by Boeing models.
Test Flight Details and Future Outlook
The crew for the flight comprised Captain Bernardo Saez-Benito, First Officer Sylvain Guiraud, Flight Engineer Ludovic Girard, and Lead Flight Test Engineers Laurent Bussière and Jaime Angoloti. Airbus's CEO of Commercial Aircraft, Lars Wagner, emphasized the significance of this achievement, highlighting the aircraft's operational efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
With 115 orders from 14 customers secured by August 2026, Airbus aims to leverage its advanced materials and fuel-efficient design to gain market share in the large freighter segment, which is poised to evolve under increasingly strict emissions regulations.
