Airbus is taking immediate action to address a critical safety concern affecting a significant portion of its A320-family jets. Following an incident with a JetBlue aircraft involved in a loss of altitude, potentially linked to solar radiation affecting flight data, the manufacturer announced a mandatory software update for about 6,000 jets worldwide.

This widespread software recall aims to mitigate data corruption that could compromise flight control systems. The affected aircraft are being recalled for a quick, approximately two-hour software reversion, which may ground some airplanes temporarily. Airlines such as American Airlines, Wizz Air, and Lufthansa have identified aircraft requiring the update and are implementing the fix. However, some jets will need hardware replacements, likely extending grounding times.

Major airlines in various regions face disruptions, with cancellations and delays expected over the coming days. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is expected to issue an emergency directive mandating the fix soon.

Historically, this is one of the largest mass recalls for Airbus in its history. The issue traces back to a flight system called ELAC, responsible for elevator and aileron commands, which are critical for aircraft pitch control. Thales, the system’s manufacturer, confirmed the software complies with Airbus’s specifications, but the root cause relates to the software's support system that is under Airbus's control.
