In a significant commercial move, Airbus has announced a new order from Spring Airlines, a major Chinese carrier, for 30 Airbus A320neo family aircraft. This purchase, disclosed on December 29, 2025, is part of China’s ongoing fleet renewal efforts amidst complex geopolitical and regulatory conditions that have historically challenged such deals. The agreement is still pending approval from relevant authorities in China and is valued at over USD 4 billion at list prices.

Spring Airlines, predominantly an A320 family operator, with an existing fleet of 478 A320neos and 12 A321neos, aims to modernize its fleet further by replacing older A320-200s with new A320neo aircraft. Deliveries are scheduled to occur between 2028 and 2032, contributing to the airline’s strategic growth plans for the coming decade.

Implications for the Chinese Aviation Market

The deal underscores the importance of the Chinese market for Airbus’s broader expansion strategy. Discussions about a potential larger order—possibly encompassing around 500 aircraft—have been ongoing, highlighting the strategic significance of China’s aviation sector.

However, geopolitical tensions, regulatory cautiousness from Chinese authorities such as the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), and domestic competition from emerging manufacturers like COMAC complicate large-scale deals. High-level diplomatic efforts, including visits by President Emmanuel Macron, are part of ongoing efforts to deepen economic and aviation ties and facilitate further deals.

With competition for delivery slots intensifying and Chinese airlines targeting rapid fleet expansion, Airbus remains committed to securing significant contracts in China, which could reshape the region’s commercial aviation landscape in the years ahead.
