Aircraft manufacturer Airbus is considering a significant increase in the production of its MRTT+ military refueling aircraft, citing strong market demand and an evolving geopolitical landscape. Traditionally, Airbus produces around four units of the Multi-Role Tanker Transport annually, but recent market assessments suggest the demand could support doubling this figure.
The MRTT+ is an upgraded version of the A330-based platform, transitioning from the A330-200 to the newer A330-800 model. The company has secured Thailand as its launch customer, with the first aircraft expected to be converted in Madrid next year, aiming for certification in 2028 and customer delivery in early 2029. This move is part of Airbus's strategy to maintain a competitive edge over rival Boeing in the tanker market.
Development of Automated Refueling Systems
Airbus continues to innovate its refueling capabilities, working with various air forces worldwide. Recent developments include automated daytime and nighttime refueling systems and efforts to incorporate night vision goggle compatibility. These technological enhancements are seen as critical to maintaining operational flexibility and safety for the tanker fleet.
"We see the market forecast as promising, and if the contracts are secured, doubling production could be justified," said María Ángeles Martí, head of Airbus's tanker program. "We are also exploring enhancements such as camera system improvements to support night operation."
Overall, Airbus remains optimistic about the future of its MRTT+ program, provided ongoing negotiations lead to new sales. The company is also exploring system upgrades and working closely with customers like Singapore and Germany to optimize the aircraft's capabilities, ensuring the fleet remains at the forefront of military refueling technology.
