Airbus UpNext, a subsidiary of Airbus, has launched a groundbreaking demonstrator called SpaceRAN aimed at advancing 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) capabilities via satellite technology. This project focuses on enabling standardized, global connectivity by exploring satellite-based 5G solutions that could serve commercial, defense, and governmental sectors.
The SpaceRAN demonstrator will utilize Airbus's innovative software-defined satellite technology to manage and optimize 5G signals directly in space. By processing data in orbit, Airbus intends to significantly reduce latency, increase data throughput, and enable direct user-to-user connectivity, enhancing overall network resilience and security.
Michael Augello, CEO of Airbus UpNext, stated that if successful, the technology could boost operational efficiency, interoperability, and security in various fields, especially in aviation and defense. Airbus has assembled a consortium of partners, including Aalyria, AccelerComm, CesiumAstro, and Deutsche Telekom, to support the project, which is part of the France 2030 national plan.
The project is expected to deliver its first results by 2028 and could be pivotal in developing future wireless standards such as 6G. Ultimately, this innovation aims to lower costs for orbital data transmission, marking a significant step toward pervasive global connectivity.
