AirAsia has announced the cancellation of its Darwin to Bali and Kuala Lumpur routes, effective April 27, after operating these services for less than a year. The airline attributed the decision to low passenger demand, describing it as "commercially unsustainable." The company plans to reallocate its capacity to other Australian cities, including launching a new Melbourne to Bali route on March 21 and increasing flights from Sydney, Perth, and Adelaide.

The airline emphasized its ongoing commitment to the Australian market, stating that it aims to provide affordable access to Asia and the world from several major cities. Passengers affected by the route suspensions will automatically receive refunds to their original payment methods. The decision has met with disapproval from the Northern Territory Government, particularly because taxpayer funds supported the Kuala Lumpur route; local officials expressed disappointment and concern over the short duration of the routes' operation.

Market Challenges and Future Plans

Despite exiting these routes, AirAsia continues to expand its network within Australia, reinforcing its focus on high-demand markets. The airline has also previously pulled out of the Cairns-Bali route in September 2025. Industry experts suggest that the move reflects ongoing difficulties faced by airlines in maintaining unprofitable services amidst fluctuating demand and operational costs. AirAsia indicated that it will keep assessing demand and adjusting its capacity to maximize efficiency and customer access.
