LOT Polish Airlines has become the first carrier to integrate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) emissions reductions into data reported through the IATA CO2 Connect calculator, marking a significant step forward in standardized aviation emissions reporting. This new reporting method incorporates specific accounting rules for SAF, allowing airlines to transparently communicate their contributions to industry-wide emissions reduction goals.
The move seeks to improve the reliability and credibility of airlines' environmental data, aligning with growing industry and regulatory pressure for verifiable sustainability practices.
“SAF is the most effective way today to reduce aviation emissions. As we ramp up the use of these fuels, we want passengers to understand the impact of the emissions reduction and our contribution to the industry goal of net-zero emissions by 2050,”said Anna Kowalska, an expert responsible for data collection and MRV at LOT Polish Airlines.
LOT was among the pioneering airlines to submit operational data through the IATA CO2 Connect platform, which now includes over 100 participating airlines. Industry observers see this development as part of a broader shift from high-level commitments toward transparent, measurable emissions reporting, a move critical for cargo operators and forwarders facing Scope 3 emissions scrutiny.
This milestone exemplifies the aviation sector's efforts to adopt consistent, industry-approved standards for measuring, reporting, and verifying sustainability efforts, thereby fostering greater accountability and transparency across the global air transport industry.
