AirlineRatings.com has published its annual list of the world’s safest airlines for 2026, featuring the top 25 full-service and low-cost carriers based on safety metrics such as incident rates, fleet age, and safety audits. The rankings emphasize the importance of turbulence prevention and pilot training, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance passenger safety.
This year marks a notable shift with Gulf carrier Etihad claiming the top spot among full-service airlines, driven by a young fleet, advanced turbulence management, and a consistent safety record. The list also introduces STARLUX and Fiji Airways as new entries, with Singapore Airlines reinstated after a turbulence-related incident exclusion in 2025.
Meanwhile, in the low-cost segment, HK Express retains its position as the safest low-cost airline for 2026, recognized for its modern fleet and low incident rates. Other notable inclusions include Spring Airlines China, the first Chinese airline to appear on the list, and airBaltic, which has jumped into the top 10. The rankings underscore that despite minor incident variations, all featured airlines are industry leaders committed to safety.
Airline Ratings' CEO, Sharon Petersen, explained that the narrow margin between top-ranking airlines indicates a high standard of safety across the board. She highlighted that the methodology considers incident rates adjusted for flight volume, participation in safety programs like IATA Turbulence Aware, and adherence to safety protocols, reinforcing that safety is maintained through consistent practices and transparency.
