The ongoing U.S. government shutdown, now over a month long, is significantly affecting the aviation industry, with major airlines and air traffic control personnel urging swift legislative action to end it. Both United Airlines and American Airlines have expressed concerns about the operational disruptions and economic impact, including thousands of air traffic controllers working without pay and facing mounting stress.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby participated in meetings with high-level officials to discuss the urgent need for a bipartisan agreement to reopen the government. American Airlines confirmed the attendance of CEO Robert Isom at these discussions, emphasizing that unpaid air traffic controllers’ conditions are unacceptable and could cause further delays during the busy holiday season.

The shutdown has caused over 13,000 essential air traffic controllers to work extended hours without compensation, leading some to take on side jobs to make ends meet. This has resulted in widespread flight delays and cancellations, with thousands of delays reported by Flightaware. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the shutdown could result in nearly 14 billion dollars in economic losses, approaching the longest funding lapse in U.S. history.

Public opinion polls indicate that the public largely blames Republicans for the impasse, adding pressure for immediate resolution. Analysts warn that if continued, the shutdown risks further disruptions to travel, economic performance, and public confidence in government actions.
