Global Aviation Sector Focuses on Resilience and Sustainability
The aviation industry in the Asia-Pacific region is increasingly prioritizing resilience and sustainability efforts amid ongoing global challenges, including geopolitical tensions and environmental pressures. Stefano Baronci, the director-general of Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific and Middle East, emphasized the industry's need to adapt to disruptions such as conflicts, supply chain issues, and rising energy insecurity.
During a recent conference in Bangkok, Baronci highlighted that many airports and airlines are investing heavily in decarbonisation initiatives, climate resilience projects, and infrastructure upgrades to ensure long-term growth. He noted the high dependence of the region on energy supplies passing through strategic choke points like the Strait of Hormuz, which underscores the importance of regional stability for air travel and trade.
Despite uncertainties, the industry demonstrates resilience and adaptability, managing fluctuating fuel costs and changing travel patterns. Baronci pointed out that the ASEAN aviation sector remained a significant contributor to regional economies in 2025, handling around 700 million passengers and supporting millions of jobs.
He stressed the potential for greater cooperation, especially between secondary cities and key markets such as China, India, and the European Union, to facilitate regional connectivity and economic growth. The industry's efforts are driven by a recognition that failure to meet climate commitments would have societal repercussions beyond aviation itself.
He concluded with optimism, expressing confidence that the sector can continue to grow by embracing innovative solutions and fostering multilateral collaboration, despite current global uncertainties.
