Alaska Airlines has announced plans to establish a new pilot base at San Diego International Airport (SAN, KSAN) in the first quarter of 2026. The airline intends to station up to 250 pilots at the facility, including 90 new hires, in response to the airport's significant growth and recent expansion of its route network.
Neil Thwaites, regional vice-president of Alaska Airlines, highlighted that San Diego has become the airline's fastest-growing hub, with an 80% increase in capacity projected between 2023 and 2026. Currently, Alaska Airlines is the second-largest airline at San Diego, holding a 22.4% market share behind Southwest Airlines.
Strategic Growth and Market Presence
This expansion aligns with Alaska Airlines' strategy to grow its presence in key markets and enhance operational efficiency. The airline's fleet consists of approximately 393 aircraft, primarily Airbus A320 family models like the A321-200 and A321neo, supplemented by Boeing 737 variants.
"San Diego is a vital hub for us, and this new pilot base will support our growth aspirations while providing better service to our customers,"
The move reflects Alaska Airlines' commitment to investing in local talent and expanding its service offerings in California, a core market for the carrier.
