The technology firm Amazon Leo has announced the launch of a new gigabit-speed antenna designed specifically for commercial aircraft. This advanced antenna system aims to deliver reliable, high-speed internet connectivity to airline passengers and crew, with speeds reaching up to 1 Gbps download and 400 Mbps upload. Using full-duplex phased array technology, the antenna supports seamless, simultaneous data transmission, enhancing passenger entertainment, crew operations, and collaboration during flights.

The antenna features a low-profile, electronics-steered design with no moving parts, making it durable and simple to install. It measures approximately 58 inches by 30 inches by 2.6 inches and is intended for exterior airframe installation. Amazon claims the installation process can be completed within a single day, thanks to its integrated modem and streamlined mounting system. This approach reduces aircraft drag and fuel consumption, supporting airline operational efficiencies.

To expand its coverage, Amazon Leo is building a global network of more than 300 ground gateways utilizing satellite and laser link technology. This infrastructure will ensure continuous connectivity over oceans, remote areas, and polar routes by transitioning seamlessly between satellites and relay data efficiently via ground stations. The company has already secured agreements with airlines such as Delta Air Lines and JetBlue, with plans to provide in-flight service starting from departure to arrival gates.

These developments aim to revolutionize the in-flight experience by enabling fast, reliable internet services that support a multitude of activities, from streaming to real-time operational updates. Amazon Leo’s satellite constellation and ground infrastructure aim to address longstanding connectivity issues over difficult terrain, positioning the company as a leading provider of satellite-based in-flight broadband solutions.
