American Airlines is planning to expand its fleet to better serve international markets, aiming for long-haul capacity growth supported by new aircraft orders and fleet modernization. Currently, the airline operates around 135 long-haul capable aircraft, with targets to increase this number to approximately 200 by the end of the decade, providing additional flexibility.

The airline's overall fleet comprises 953 aircraft, with strategic decisions during the pandemic to retire certain long-haul subfleets, including Boeing 767s and Airbus A330s, to enhance efficiency. The post-pandemic recovery has faced some supply chain delays, affecting their fleet scaling efforts.

CEO Robert Isom highlighted the importance of fleet standardization, with plans to operate a single widebody type alongside more domestic aircraft like the Airbus A321XLR. The airline has 20 Boeing 787-9s on order, featuring a new premium-heavy layout, with deliveries beginning this year. An additional fleet flexibility includes options for 25-30 Boeing 787s and potential order modifications for A321XLRs, allowing faster international growth.

Looking ahead, American aims to improve profitability in 2026 and 2027, driven by increased bookings and a rebound from recent disruptions such as the U.S. government shutdown. The airline remains optimistic about consumer demand and intends to introduce a product that appeals to travelers, supporting its long-term growth strategy.
