U.S. startup Astro Mechanica has introduced an innovative unmanned aircraft system designed to host high-energy laser technology and nonkinetic effects. The aircraft, envisioned as a 25,000-pound class, conventional-style airliner with advanced features, aims to augment military capabilities through directed energy systems.

The company's proprietary hybrid-electric propulsion would use a kerosene-fueled turboshaft engine driving generators capable of producing four megawatts of electric power. This power would be distributed to propulsors under each wing, with an excess surplus of approximately 750 kilowatts available to power laser, microwave, or jammer devices. Cooling air from the propulsors assists in dissipating up to 500 kilowatts of waste heat.

Unveiled at the Air Force Association’s Air, Space and Cyber conference, this concept follows recent developments like the U.S. Army’s production of the AeroVironment Locust X3 laser system. Astro Mechanica aims to revive interest in airborne directed energy platforms. The company plans to collaborate with existing laser system suppliers and has signed multiple letters of intent.

"This concept showcases a significant step toward operational high-energy laser aircraft," said Steve Trimble, reporting on the innovation. The aircraft's unique propulsion and energy management systems could enhance military surveillance and interdiction capabilities in future conflicts.

Overall, this development indicates a promising direction for integrating advanced laser technology into unmanned aerial platforms, providing versatile options for defense and strategic operations.
