Australia's first large-scale electric vehicle charging hub is set to be built at Melbourne Airport, with construction beginning on a facility that will feature 24 charging bays, slated for completion in 2026. The hub, situated within the airport precinct, will include 150kW and 300kW chargers, drive-through bays for larger vehicles, and amenities such as accessible bays, a bathroom, and a canopy.
Antoine Denis, General Manager of bp pulse Australia, emphasized the importance of this development in supporting Australia's growing EV infrastructure. Since 2022, bp pulse has been expanding its network of charging stations across the country, leveraging over 41,000 global charging bays to introduce its first large-scale hub in Australia. The Melbourne Airport site is strategically chosen to serve professional drivers, travelers, and local residents, facilitating quick and seamless recharging experiences.
Support for commercial and local EV users
The charging hub's location on Airport Drive and Francis Briggs Road is expected to support around 34,000 daily visitors to the airport, including Uber drivers, who will benefit from bp pulse’s existing Uber EV charging discounts. Jai McDermott, Melbourne Airport's Chief of Ground Transport, Property, and Retail, highlighted the airport's commitment to sustainability, noting that the hub will be powered entirely by renewable electricity generated from onsite solar farms, enhancing its environmental credentials.
This initiative demonstrates Melbourne Airport's dedication to advancing sustainable transportation, supporting the transition to electric vehicles among professional drivers, airport staff, and the broader community. The project is part of a broader effort to foster eco-friendly mobility options at key transport hubs across Australia.
