Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is increasingly recognized as a critical component in reducing the aviation industry's carbon footprint and achieving long-term sustainability objectives. In an article for Open Access Government, Geoff Maynard, a member of the Aviation Policy Group at CILT UK, discusses the significance of SAF and the UK government's recent legislative efforts to promote its adoption. The UK has introduced a bill mandating the inclusion of SAF in jet fuel sold in the country, with the plan to escalate the blend percentage to 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040.

Maynard highlights that SAF is produced from sustainable resources such as agricultural waste and used cooking oil, which can be used in existing aircraft engines without modifications. The fuel’s environmental advantage lies in its capacity to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80%, as it is sourced from recent atmospheric carbon absorbed by raw materials. The development of SAF also fosters economic growth through new industries and job creation.

The UK policy supports a mandated increase in SAF usage, initially at 2% of jet fuel and gradually rising, incentivizing industry investment despite the current high costs, which are significantly higher than traditional jet fuel. The future of SAF looks promising, driven by technological advancements, increased production capacity, and a shift towards net-zero aviation goals. Major airlines and researchers are exploring new methods to lower costs and enhance environmental benefits, with aircraft being designed to operate with 100% SAF in the future.

The broader ecological benefits include waste reduction and circular economy practices. As the aviation sector moves away from fossil fuels, SAF is anticipated to fill the impending gap, ensuring progress towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly industry.
