The aviation industry gathered at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., for the 68th Annual Laureate Awards organized by Aviation Week, celebrating achievements across aerospace, defense, and space sectors. The event acknowledged leaders and organizations that made significant contributions over the past year, including awards for electric propulsion, lunar exploration, and in-flight connectivity.
Among the distinguished winners was Safran, recognized for its ENGINeUS electric motor which received type certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, paving the way for hybrid-electric aircraft in commercial aviation. Boeing Defense was awarded for its leadership in military programs, notably the U.S. Air Force’s F-47 project. Firefly Aerospace received the Grand Laureate for its Blue Ghost lunar lander, which successfully conducted a full-duration mission on the Moon supported by NASA.
Honoring Pioneers and Innovators
Additionally, the awards honored individuals such as Bill Franke, a key figure in low-cost carrier development, and Professors Bob Twiggs and Jordi Puig-Suari for inventing the cubesat standard that revolutionized small satellite technology. Rocket Lab’s CEO Peter Beck received the Pathfinder Award for his contributions to space launch vehicles and small satellite ventures.
The event underscored ongoing advancements in sustainable propulsion, satellite technology, and industry workforce development. The ceremony was sponsored by major organizations including PwC, Boeing, Chromalloy, Safran, Cessna Beechcraft, and L3Harris, reflecting its importance as a convergence point for industry innovation and future collaboration.
