Bangladesh's Biman Bangladesh Airlines has announced a significant order for up to 14 new aircrafts, including ten Boeing 787 models and four Boeing 737-8s, as part of its fleet renewal and expansion strategy. The airline has committed to acquiring eight 787-10s and two 787-9s, with plans to deploy the larger 787s on services to the Middle East, signifying a move towards modernizing its international fleet.
The new aircraft are expected to bolster Biman's route network, supporting long-haul connections to Europe and North America, while the MAX aircraft will serve regional destinations across the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia. Currently, the airline operates a mixed fleet that includes Boeing 787s, Boeing 777s, Boeing 737s, and regional aircraft, highlighting its fleet diversity.
Strategic Fleet Modernization
"The new fuel-efficient, technologically advanced aircraft will modernize Biman’s fleet, sharpen operational performance, and extend its international route network—strengthening Bangladesh’s position in the global aviation market," said the airline’s CEO, Kaizer Sohel Ahmed.
"This has become the largest aircraft order in Biman's 54-year history," he added, indicating future ambitions for further fleet growth.
The carrier has expressed intentions to more than double its fleet size by 2035, considering additional orders from both Boeing and Airbus. Last signed agreements with Boeing in 2019 involved purchases of two 787-9s. The latest order marks a historic milestone for Biman, reflecting its strategic focus on fleet modernization to improve operational efficiency and service offerings.
