Banyuwangi, in East Java, Indonesia, is positioning itself as a key destination for sustainable tourism through a groundbreaking collaboration. The partnership between Banyuwangi Airport—Indonesia’s first Green Airport—and Santai Seaplane aims to introduce amphibious aircraft operations that will connect remote islands and ecologically sensitive areas for both tourism and regional development.
Recognized for its eco-friendly infrastructure, Banyuwangi Airport features natural ventilation, energy-efficient systems, and a grass-covered roof, embodying Indonesia's commitment to sustainability. The initiative will utilize Banyuwangi’s water aerodrome and nearby waters in Menjangan for seaplane landings, providing scenic aerial tours over volcanoes, beaches, and remote destinations, thereby enhancing biodiversity conservation efforts through eco-tourism.
Expansion Plans and Operations
The project plans to extend routes to Bali, Lombok, and Moyo Island, offering charter and scheduled services. This will facilitate barrier-free access to islands that have previously been difficult to navigate, encouraging responsible tourism activities such as wildlife viewing, nature hikes, and visits to national parks. The amphibious flights are expected to begin commercial operations by early 2026, establishing Banyuwangi as an international gateway for eco-conscious travelers.
Officials state that this initiative exemplifies Indonesia’s broader eco-tourism strategy by reducing carbon emissions through innovative low-impact aircraft and green infrastructure. The collaboration marks a significant step forward in integrating sustainable principles into the aviation sector and promoting regional economic growth through environmentally responsible travel.
