Benton County volunteers engaged in search and rescue training recently received insights into military aviation operations during an exercise supported by the Oregon National Guard. The demonstration involved a UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter, showcasing its capabilities in supporting rescue missions, including deploying rescuers into challenging terrains and evacuating injured individuals.
The training, part of an annual program running from March through April, emphasizes practical skills such as navigation, shelter building, and aircraft coordination. Participants learn about helicopter landing zones, winch operations, and rescue procedures, which are critical for effective emergency response. The Oregon National Guard’s involvement enhances collaboration between active military units and civilian rescue teams, improving overall readiness.
Kevin Higgins, the program's director, highlighted the importance of community volunteers who are prepared to respond at any hour. These volunteers often operate under demanding conditions, sometimes during nighttime or extended missions. The program culminates in a 24-hour field exercise, where volunteers demonstrate their rescue skills and pass a certification process administered by the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association.
This initiative reflects Benton County's dedication to community safety and demonstrates the value of integrating aviation support into local rescue efforts. The program continues to invite more residents to participate, emphasizing the significance of trained volunteers in saving lives during emergencies.
