Bangladesh's flag carrier, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, has announced plans to purchase 14 additional aircraft from Boeing, including models from the 787 and 737 MAX series. The decision received approval from the airline’s board on December 30, and negotiations regarding pricing and contractual terms are currently ongoing. This development is part of a broader trade agreement between Bangladesh and the United States, which aims to boost aircraft procurement and reciprocal trade relations.
Biman primarily operates a Boeing fleet, with 14 of its 19 aircraft originating from the United States manufacturer. The planned fleet expansion involves two Boeing 787-9s, eight Boeing 787-10s, and four Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. However, these orders are not yet final, and the airline has emphasized that the purchase is contingent upon successful negotiations and formal contract signing.
Airbus Expansion and Market Strategy
Alongside its Boeing orders, Biman is exploring Airbus aircraft, with recent initiatives aiming to introduce the Airbus A350 into its fleet. The airline had announced a potential order for ten A350 aircraft, including two A350F and eight A350 passenger models. Despite this, the status of these orders remains unconfirmed. Biman operates a diverse fleet that includes four Boeing 737-800, four Boeing 777-300ER, four Boeing 787-9, and five De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 aircraft, reflecting its regional and international routes.
Established in 1972, Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the nation’s flag carrier with hubs at Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet. The airline historically served long-haul destinations such as Tokyo and New York City, but service to the US has been currently paused. The airline has expressed interest in fleet expansion, considering various narrow and wide-body aircraft to enhance its international reach, although some previous plans involving aircraft destined for other carriers did not materialize. Today, Biman continues to connect Bangladesh with major airports across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, maintaining its status as the country’s largest airline.
