In advance of the upcoming UK Budget, the British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) has issued a call to action for government support to sustain future aviation growth. BALPA has emphasized the need for affordable pilot training and investment in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) as key priorities.
The union, representing over 10,000 pilots, highlighted that the current cost of pilot training—exceeding £100,000—is a significant barrier for many aspiring pilots, risking a future shortage of UK-trained professionals. BALPA advocates for government policies that can reduce the financial burdens faced by trainees, including grants and loans.
Supporting Airport Expansion and Environmental Goals
Furthermore, BALPA supports the expansion of Heathrow and Gatwick airports, which are set to generate substantial economic benefits. However, the union cautions that without adequate pilot supply and sustainable fuel infrastructure, these benefits may not be fully realized.
“The government has recently cleared the way for millions of pounds of private investment in airport expansion at Heathrow and Gatwick. This investment will bring hundreds of thousands more flights in and out of the UK, with huge economic benefits as a result,” said Amy Leversidge, BALPA General Secretary.
She stressed that, to maximize the advantages of airport expansion, the UK must develop domestic SAF production facilities to meet government environmental targets and ensure greater energy security. The union also criticizes proposed increases in Air Passenger Duty, arguing they could negatively impact holidaymakers after heavy private investments in airport infrastructure.
Overall, BALPA’s message underscores the urgency for policy measures that support pilot training affordability, sustainable aviation initiatives, and balanced taxation, to facilitate a resilient and environmentally responsible aviation industry in the UK.
