In celebration of its 80th anniversary, Cathay Pacific is launching a special campaign to introduce retro liveries on three of its aircraft models, including an Airbus A350, Boeing 777-300, and Boeing 747 freighter. This effort aims to honor its historic visual identity from the Kai Tak era, characterized by a green-striped livery that symbolized the airline’s legacy in Hong Kong’s aviation history. The aircraft are currently being repainted in Xiamen, with completion scheduled throughout 2026, and serve as a visual tribute to four decades of growth and regional influence.

The original 1971 livery, famous for its green stripes, was a hallmark of Cathay Pacific’s branding during a period of rapid expansion. The reapplication of this design, complemented by an anniversary emblem, seeks to bridge past and present, maintaining fidelity to the airline's heritage while embracing modern updates. This initiative not only celebrates a milestone but also reinforces Hong Kong’s reputation as a significant aviation hub and the airline’s longstanding regional narrative.

The selection of aircraft spans both passenger and cargo operations, reflecting the broad operational scope of Cathay Pacific. Early sightings of aircraft in the heritage scheme have generated excitement among aviation followers, emphasizing the initiative’s significance for branding, regional identity, and emotional connection with travelers. Moreover, the heritage liveries stand as a testament to the airline’s evolution, from its founding in 1946 to its current status as an international carrier.

Throughout its history, Cathay Pacific has undergone several visual transformations, from a modest dark blue livery to the modern design introduced in 2015. The current repainting preserves the legacy design with subtle updates, ensuring the visual integrity of the airline's brand is maintained as it celebrates its 80th year. As these aircraft return to service, they symbolize the airline’s resilience and dedication to honoring its storied past while looking forward to future growth.
