China is making significant progress in urban air mobility through the development of advanced electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Aerofugia, a start-up based in Chengdu and supported by Geely, has unveiled its AE200 model at the Aero Asia Show in Zhuhai. Designed for regional and urban routes, the AE200 can carry up to six passengers and features a range of 108 nautical miles with a cruise speed of 124 knots.
The company has already demonstrated the aircraft's capabilities by introducing the passenger version, the AE200-100, which has successfully passed safety and manufacturing inspection standards as part of its certification process. Aerofugia’s efforts are setting a precedent for China’s aim to become a leader in sustainable, innovative air travel. The certification process includes extensive flight testing, such as a crewed low-altitude flight conducted in Chengdu using a leased AgustaWestland AW109 helicopter, validating operational procedures and routes involving the Sichuan–Chongqing Low-Altitude Cultural Tourism Corridor.
Industry Certification and Strategic Partnerships
As China’s first endeavor to certify a piloted eVTOL aircraft, Aerofugia has obtained an air operator certificate under China’s CCAR-135 regulations. The company is currently in Phase IV of its type certification. It has also expanded its industry alliances, notably with Siemens Digital Industries Software and Sichuan Airlines Group, to accelerate research, development, and integration of air mobility services.
With over 1,000 orders secured, including a major commitment from Sino Jet for 100 aircraft, Aerofugia is preparing for mass production at its new Chengdu facility, slated to open in 2026. This development underscores China’s strategic push into the global eVTOL market, aiming to revolutionize urban and regional transportation with sustainable solutions that promise to transform future travel.
The AE200 project exemplifies China’s ambitions to lead in innovative aviation technology and offers a glimpse into a future where urban air mobility plays a crucial role in daily transportation needs. As demand rises, Aerofugia’s progress signals the beginning of a new era for Chinese aviation and the global eVTOL industry.
