China Airlines has achieved a significant environmental milestone by operating a Taipei to Amsterdam flight utilizing approximately 40 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This flight is part of the airline’s participation in the SkyTeam’s Aviation Challenge and incorporated a "book and claim" carbon offset strategy, leading to a reduction of approximately 93.2 tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the carbon absorbed annually by Taipei’s Daan Park.
The airline has integrated various sustainable practices, including lighter tableware in business class, recycled paper menus, and digital check-ins, all aimed at reducing fuel consumption and waste. Furthermore, China Airlines introduced plant-based meals in collaboration with Michelin Green Star restaurants and provided travel kits featuring sustainable products developed with design firms such as FRAMA.
The airline plans to expand the use of SAF on flights to Europe, North America, and Asia, reflecting its broader commitment to environmental sustainability. It is also scheduled to receive two Boeing 787-9 aircraft by year's end, which will further enhance fuel efficiency by decreasing consumption by 20% and reducing noise levels by 30%. The fleet expansion includes an aspiration to deliver 14 Boeing 787-9 aircraft within the next year, supporting its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
This recent flight underscores China Airlines’ strategic focus on sustainability through operational improvements and fleet modernization, signaling the airline’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact within the aviation industry.
