China Eastern Airlines is expanding its international network by launching a new route connecting Shanghai to Argentina via New Zealand. This development makes it the first mainland Chinese airline to serve all six inhabited continents, reflecting China's accelerating global aviation presence. The announcement was made at the 2025 North Bund International Aviation Forum, which serves as a platform to showcase China's aviation ambitions.
The airline's focus on network expansion is complemented by its efforts to incorporate advanced technology, including AI-powered digital assistants and service enhancements for inbound travelers. The event also highlighted China's initiatives to develop a comprehensive international aviation ecosystem, with Shanghai Pudong International Airport functioning as a major transfer hub where international passenger transfers increased significantly in recent months.
Strategic Growth and Innovation
Since early 2024, China Eastern has launched numerous new routes across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, supporting the Belt and Road Initiative. The airline's commitments to innovation include launching AI tools like "Dongdong" and physical robots, alongside new services such as the "China Pass" for travelers. These measures aim to strengthen the airline’s global connectivity and position China as a leader in international civil aviation.
The forum, organized by China's Ministry of Transport and the Shanghai government, underscores the country's strategic investments in aviation infrastructure and technological advancements, fostering a new era of "Aviation+" integration across sectors such as culture, tourism, and MICE.
