China Eastern Air Holding Co Ltd has officially opened a new branch in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on April 22. This strategic move aims to strengthen Urumqi's status as a major international aviation hub connecting Asia and Europe, representing a significant step in regional development and China's broader open-door policy.
The development aligns with the national "Go West" initiative and the Belt and Road Initiative, both of which emphasize expanding economic and infrastructure links across western China. The new branch is expected to support China Eastern's domestic route network and boost international flights. Additionally, the airline plans to operate domestically developed Comac C919 aircraft on routes involving Xinjiang, enhancing the region's connectivity.
"The establishment of the Xinjiang branch is part of our effort to promote regional integration and expand international cooperation," said a China Eastern spokesperson. The move is anticipated to facilitate economic growth in the region and position Urumqi as a key transit point between China and Eurasia, fostering greater integration of regional and global markets.
