China Southern Airlines (CZ), based in Guangzhou, has commenced the construction of an extensive Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility and cargo hub at Urumqi, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The project involves a total investment exceeding CNY1.6 billion (USD234 million), forming part of governmental support initiatives to bolster regional aviation infrastructure.
The new maintenance zone will feature a hangar spanning 65,991 square meters, anticipated to be the largest civil aviation hangar in northwestern China. The first phase of the cargo facilities will cover approximately 60,000 square meters, including over 20,000 square meters designated for terminal operations handling both domestic and international freight. The facility aims to enhance the airline’s logistical and operational capacity in the region.
The project’s completion and operational entry are scheduled for 2028, aligning with regional development and connectivity strategies. The investment underscores China Southern’s commitment to expanding its infrastructure and capacity, in conjunction with national support schemes designed to strengthen western China’s aviation industry.
