China has experienced a significant increase in cross-border travel during the first quarter of 2026, with a reported 22.3% rise driven by expanded visa-free agreements. The National Immigration Administration indicated that 21.3 million trips were made in both directions, reflecting a 14.2% year-on-year growth. This growth is largely attributed to recent reforms that simplified visa procedures and removed barriers for travelers from neighboring countries and beyond.
Chen Chuanren, a key aviation editor, pointed out that the visa liberalization measures have been instrumental in encouraging both tourism and business endeavors. The surge benefits the aviation sector, as airlines adjust schedules to accommodate increased passenger flows, and hospitality networks experience higher occupancy rates.
Industry analysts view this trend as a positive sign of economic recovery, with potential for further policy relaxations to sustain growth. China's efforts aim to strengthen regional economic ties and promote cultural exchanges, positioning the country as a vital hub in the Asia-Pacific's increasing connectivity. As the travel industry adapts, airlines and related services prepare for sustained passenger increases and capacity enhancements in the coming months.
