In a significant development for commercial aviation in China, Airbus announced it has secured an order for 137 A320neo jets from China Southern Airlines. This purchase, valued at approximately US$21.37 billion, marks a continued shift towards European aircraft in China's rapidly expanding fleet, amid ongoing speculation about a future deal between China and Boeing.

China Southern, one of the country’s leading state-owned carriers based in Guangzhou, plans to acquire 102 of the aircraft, with the remaining 35 going to its subsidiary Xiamen Airlines. Deliveries are scheduled to commence between 2028 and 2032, subject to regulatory approvals. The deal demonstrates the airline’s effort to modernize its fleet and bolster its competitive position.

Market Context and Strategic Implications

This order aligns with broader government initiatives such as the Greater Bay Area development and the Belt and Road Initiative, which aim to expand regional connectivity and economic growth. It also underscores Airbus’s increasing market share in China, reaching new heights after a record number of orders last year from several Chinese carriers, including Air China and China Eastern.

"The deal is conducive to China Southern’s fleet upgrade and strategic development, helping the airline meet future demand and support national initiatives," said the airline’s officials.

While Boeing continues to be a potential partner for future aircraft deals, the current focus remains on Airbus’s expanding footprint within China’s aviation landscape. The timely deliveries of these aircraft will support China Southern's objective to improve operational efficiency and fleet reliability in the coming years.
