Chinese aerospace startup AutoFlight has unveiled a novel vessel-based mobile vertiport designed for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This innovative infrastructure extends urban air mobility capabilities to rivers, lakes, and seas, addressing traditional challenges such as land site availability, slow deployment times, and complex takeoff and landing procedures.
The demonstration, conducted on November 22 on Dianshan Lake, showcases a flexible and scalable solution for integrating eVTOL operations over water. By leveraging maritime vessels as mobile vertiports, AutoFlight aims to expand operational environments beyond land-based urban centers, offering new possibilities for urban and regional mobility in congested areas.
Developing water-based vertiports could significantly improve the implementation of eVTOL aircraft in densely populated or geographically constrained regions, facilitating faster deployment and wider access to aerial mobility services. This approach exemplifies the industry's efforts to innovate transportation infrastructure, potentially revolutionizing how city-to-city and intra-city travel is conducted using electric vertical aircraft.
AutoFlight's initiative aligns with ongoing efforts across the aerospace sector to develop versatile, climate-resilient, and rapid-deployment platforms for urban air mobility, marking a step forward in the integration of water-based aviation infrastructure.
