The Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Coalition, representing over fifty members from the entire value chain, including farmers, producers, and industry partners, is actively working to promote the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels. According to Executive Director Alison Grrab, the coalition's efforts focus on fostering collaboration, technological innovation, and market development to advance SAF usage in the aviation industry.
Grrab stressed the coalition's emphasis on federal advocacy to support domestic staff production, aiming to utilize American feedstocks, create jobs for U.S. farmers, and position the country as a leader in SAF, leveraging both economic and technological advantages.
Industry Perspectives and Market Resilience
Tom Michaels, government affairs director at United Airlines, explained that SAF can be integrated without requiring new infrastructure, highlighting the strategic importance of SAF for airline resilience. Michaels noted that United Airlines' interest in SAF dates back to 2009, when high oil prices motivated the airline to seek long-term solutions to market shocks and enhance resilience.
The coalition’s initiatives are designed to accelerate the development of biofuels, support American feedstocks, and promote policy measures that facilitate sector growth. The report underscores that policy support is essential for expanding SAF deployment, which benefits both the aviation industry and agricultural stakeholders.
