Cybercriminals are targeting passengers who post complaints on social media, impersonating airline staff to offer fake compensation and steal sensitive data. Check Point Software has identified thousands of fake profiles on platforms like X, Facebook, and Instagram that mimic airline customer services, monitoring public conversations and pushing victims to WhatsApp where their deception continues.

The scam involves three main steps: requesting personal details, promising high compensation, and redirecting victims to payment apps or forms designed to collect banking information. Many of these fake accounts are newly created and lack followers, indicating a rising trend in such fraudulent activities.

Artificial intelligence may soon amplify these scams by automating responses, mimicking official communication styles, and conducting conversations in multiple languages—making scams more convincing and widespread.

Authorities emphasize the importance of using official airline channels for handling complaints, warning users to be cautious of unknown contacts suggesting discussions over WhatsApp or requesting banking or personal information. Awareness and strict adherence to verified communication methods are crucial in preventing these financial and data thefts.
