Dassault Aviation has conducted flight tests of two new artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms on its Rafale fighter jet. These tests are part of ongoing efforts to incorporate AI technology into military aircraft to support pilots and enhance operational capabilities. The company developed one algorithm internally while collaborating with Thales, a prominent defense technology firm, on the second.
These advancements come at a time when France aims to modernize its fleet, especially after the collapse of a joint European project. The integration of AI is expected to improve decision-making speed and assist pilots in combat scenarios, potentially paving the way for future upgrades and the deployment of autonomous drone wingmen.
Officials have expressed confidence that the algorithms have matured sufficiently for inclusion in future Rafale upgrades, emphasizing their role within broader defense modernization initiatives. Internationally, other countries such as Sweden and the United States are also experimenting with AI in combat aircraft, reflecting a worldwide trend toward autonomous systems. Dassault remains committed to developing its AI capabilities and collaborating with partners to maintain its technological edge.
